Shanti-Salam-Shalom Peace Project
Placing Israeli-Arab, Palestinian and American Youth on the Path to Intercultural Understanding and Success
At Shanti-Salam-Shalom peace Project, we are strong believers in the ability of our youth to find and embody solutions for our joint-futures. Our programming and activities are designed to help our youth reach their goals and fulfill their highest potential. We are proud of all our children, and love watching them grow into bright-minded and confident individuals.
We focus on high school programs for exchange of Arab Israel, Jewish Israeli, and Palestinians from the West Bank with American high school students. The word “Salam” is Arabic for Peace, “Shalom” is Hebrew for Peace, and in Punjabi, “Shanti” also means Peace for Indians and Pakistanis.
We believe that change in societies, communities and policies comes from the youth and those able to carry forward and influence major events in history through a shift of paradigm. Under-pinning this shift, and one way to influence it is to provide students with an understanding of Conflict Resolution. I believe that in this way a strong foundation for collaboration can be built between Palestinian, Israeli and American youth communities working together, sharing ideas, and learning about each others’ cultures, customs, and dynamics.
We build bridges of understanding between Eastern and Western cultures, and between Israeli and Palestinian youth. Building early connections will help those who participate to understand the Palestinian Israeli conflict differently, and beyond cultural or political stereotypes. This project will enhance this opportunity through workshops held with students both in Israel/Palestine and in the US. In this way, we can collaborate towards building a better future.

Project Background & Meet the Founder
Committed to Change
My name is Ibtisam Ahmad Ali. I'm Palestinian with Israeli citizenship, and have spent many years working with local communities, examining their needs and interests, and finding ways to empower and assist them both in my hometown of Akre, Israel, and now in Portland, Oregon. My interest in work in this are stems in my belief in the efficacy of empowering local communities by connecting them with others who hold similar ideals and values.
I graduated from Portland State University’s Conflict Resolution Masters program in 2016, and have since worked with the Iraqi women refugee community in Oregon to empower them in different aspects of their lives (socioeconomic, educational, cultural, political and legal aspects), and to improve the integration process for them. After my work with the Iraqi immigrants, I worked as a medical and legal translator from Arabic to English, and from English to Arabic for immigrants and refugees from Arabic-speaking countries.
In my early years worked in my local community in Israel in tourism, marketing and book-keeping in neighborhoods with both integrated Arab and Israeli local populations. I have used my fluency in Arabic, Hebrew and English, as well as my cross-cultural understandings to build bridges between people.
These experiences provided a deep understanding of the kinds of work that still needs to be done with these and similar immigrant communities, in order to set them on the right path for their lives in the US, and to connect them with the resources they need.
